Jesus saved me from a pit of hopelessness and despair, He has brought me to a life I never thought possible. He simply asks that I trust and obey Him. Serving is one of the ways that I can do that. Psalm 33:18 says, “The Lord watches over those who obey Him, those who trust in His constant love.”
I consider it a privilege to be able to serve in the name of Jesus. It gives me so much JOY, especially now that I am retired as I have more time to serve Him. God gives us seasons of life, and the challenge becomes where and how to serve. God knows our hearts, He will direct our paths to what He would have us do. “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10)
One of my most heartwarming moments in service was during a meeting with my mentee. I am serving as a mentor in a mentorship program called “Flourish”. When I met my mentee, she had a lot of overwhelming doubts and fears regarding who God was, and the understanding of His promises written in scripture. For weeks, we’d meet and mull over all the questions and doubts. I chose to be faithful, and allowed God to use me as I served one of His beloved daughters. During one of our sessions, the Holy Spirit washed over her and she was finally filled with understanding of who God says He is. To witness God’s love and mercy fill her heart and tears flow from her eyes filled my heart with joy. God equipped me as I made myself available to come alongside her to read what His Word truly says. All I needed to do was to be willing, His word did the rest.
While a mentorship program may seem like a small thing compared to other areas of service, I’ve learned that when we allow God to use us, He turns small mundane tasks into overwhelming blessings. Not just for those being served, but for us who’ve been faithful and chosen to give God our ‘yes’.
“For all of God’s promises have been fulfilled in Christ with a resounding ‘Yes!’ And through Christ, our ‘Amen’ ascends to God for His glory. It is God who enables us, along with you, to stand firm for Christ. He has commissioned us, and He has identified us as His own by placing the Holy Spirit in our hearts as the first installment that guarantees everything He has promised us.” (1 Corinthians 1:20-22)
I pray that every follower of Jesus would experience the joy of being in service.
